Frommer's Review
This is the chain's 50th property and its first new opening since 1983. Touted as the first true international hotel in Guangzhou, Shangri-La will have its work cut out as all the super-luxury brands start to arrive in Guangzhou at once. There will be a Hyatt, a Westin, a Sofitel, and a Mandarin Oriental opening in 2008, to say nothing of the 25 other five-stars that are opening in the province before 2010. Shangri-La is currently fending off the competition and rates as the biggest and best so far in the city. Rooms are some of the largest you'll find in Guanzhou, and each has fantastic views of the Pearl River. Ostentatious gold-leaf and hardwoods give the rooms a traditional Chinese air. Still, ultra-modern features such as large flatscreen TVs and sleek leather swivel chairs ensure that international travelers will feel right at home.
Facilities: 8 restaurants and bars; indoor and outdoor swimming pool; tennis and squash courts; fitness room; sauna; children's playground; tour and ticket desk; limousine service; forex; 2 conference centers; shopping arcade; salon; babysitting; dry cleaning; valet

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
