Guatemala City's almost 18,000-sq.-m (200,000-sq.-ft.) Botanical Garden was the first in Central America and the only one in the country. It displays more than 700 varieties of local and exotic plants, including many endangered species. All exhibits are labeled with their common name in Spanish and their scientific name in Latin. Of late, the Botanical Garden has had some maintenance problems resulting from its precarious financial position. Various international institutions such as the Missouri Botanical Garden have offered to become involved, and hopefully the financial and overall situation will improve.
