Getting There

By car, the SS298 branches north from Perugia, off the E45, through rugged scenery. Faster but less scenic is the new four-lane SS318, connecting Perugia and Gubbio in about half an hour—making it all the easier to include this rewarding stop on an Umbrian itinerary. Gubbio is not served directly by train, though Fossato di Vico, 18km (11 miles) south, is on the Rome–Ancona line, with trains arriving about every 2 hours. Buses run from that station to Gubbio about every hour. Eight or nine daily BusItalia Nord buses (www.fsbusitalia.it; tel. 075/963-7001) run between Gubbio and Perugia (70 min.); they arrive at Piazza 40 Martiri, named for citizens killed by the Nazis for aiding partisans during World War II.
