Planning a Trip

Getting There

By Car -- Gunnison is located on U.S. 50, midway between Montrose and Salida. From Denver, the most direct route is U.S. 285 southwest to Poncha Springs, then west on U.S. 50. From Grand Junction, follow U.S. 50 through Montrose.

By Plane -- The Gunnison-Crested Butte Airport, 711 Rio Grande Ave. (tel. 970/641-2304), is just off U.S. 50, a few blocks south of downtown Gunnison. American (tel. 800/433-7300) and Delta (tel] 800/221-1212) provide air service during ski season and United Express (tel. 800/241-6522) provides daily year-round service from Denver.

Visitor Information

Contact the Gunnison Country Chamber of Commerce, 500 E. Tomichi Ave., Gunnison, CO 81230 (tel. 800/851-0482 or 970/641-1501; www.gunnisoncrestedbutte.com), which operates a visitor center at the same location, open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Getting Around

The town lies along the southeast bank of the west-flowing Gunnison River. Tomichi Avenue (U.S. 50) runs east-west through town. Main Street (Colo. 135) intersects Tomichi Avenue in the center of town and proceeds north to Crested Butte.

Gunnison Valley Hospital, with a 24-hour emergency room, is at 711 N. Taylor St. (tel. 970/641-1456), 2 blocks east of Main Street and 6 blocks north of U.S. 50. The post office is located at 200 N. Wisconsin St. at Virginia Avenue; for hours and other information, contact the U.S. Postal Service (tel. 800/275-8777; www.usps.com). For road conditions (winter only), call tel. 877/315-7623 (in-state only).

Winter Carnival, early February; Cattlemen's Days, Colorado's longest-running rodeo, late July; Art in the Park, mid-July; Classic and Custom Car Show, late August; and the Night of Lights, early December.
