Lodging rates are at their highest in Gunnison in summer and at Christmas. You'll usually find the lowest rates in late winter and early spring. Major chain and franchise motels that provide reasonably priced lodging in Gunnison include the Best Western Tomichi Village Inn, on U.S. 50, 1 mile east of Gunnison (tel. 800/641-1131 or 970/641-1131), charging double rates of $79 to $149 in summer and $59 to $85 the rest of the year; Comfort Inn, 911 N. Main St. (tel. 800/424-6423 or 970/642-1000), with rates of $90 to $100 double in summer and $70 to $90 at other times; and Quality Inn, 400 E. Tomichi Ave. (tel. 800/424-6423 or 970/641-1237), with double rates from $85 to $115 in summer and $55 to $85 at other times. Room tax adds just over 11% to lodging bills.
Camping
In addition to the campgrounds in Curecanti National Recreation Area , you'll find dozens of sites scattered throughout the Gunnison National Forest and lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (tel. 970/641-0471). Wildwood Resort also offers RV sites.
