Jacko's

This little no-frills restaurant in the market is run by Jacko, a retired fisherman, and his entire family. Now, outsiders also wait on you and the decor has improved, but the fish is still good, prepared without pretense, the prices reasonable, and the friendly spirit of Jacko's family still reigns. As Jacko originally came from Izmir, on the coast of Turkey, you'll also find a Sephardic-Aegean touch in first courses such as the Turkish-style "paella" or in the meze of little salads that comes with your main course. The sesame shrimp and the shrimp sautéed in wine and garlic are fresh and tasty. Always ask the waiter about specials and the catch of the day. From the Carmelit stop at Paris Square, walk 2 blocks down South Nathanson Street and turn right into the market. From there, anyone will point out the place to you -- it's a Haifa institution.
