Hotels

Moderate -- Another good choice for families, if you have a car and don't need to stay downtown, is the former Maranova Suites property across the bridge in Dartmouth, recently made over as the Super 8 Dartmouth (tel. 902/463-9520 or 888/561-7666).Yes, I know, but this suite hotel is right across the harbor from Halifax and a 2-minute walk to frequent ferry service to downtown -- definitely one of the better options in town for travelers with kids on a ginger-ale budget instead of a champagne one. Housed in a modern concrete building, it features rooms that are large and tidy. Many of the 84 units have separate sitting areas, kitchenettes, balconies, and flat-screen televisions. Don't expect anything fancy; these rooms are basic, simple, and clean, but some have wonderful views of the harbor -- ask when you book. Rates range from as low as C$89 (US$80/£45) per night up to C$350 (US$315/£175). It's located at 65 King St., reached by crossing the Angus MacDonald bridge from Halifax's waterfront and quickly exiting onto Windmill Road (east), which becomes Alderney; go left at Queen Street, then left again on King.

Inexpensive -- The 75-bed Halifax Heritage House Hostel (tel. 902/422-3863) is located at 1253 Barrington St., within walking distance of downtown attractions. You'll usually share rooms with other travelers (several private and family rooms are available); there are lockers in each room, shared bathrooms, and a shared, fully equipped kitchen. Rates are C$20 (US$18/£10) and up per person in dormitories, C$50 (C$45/£25) for a double bed in a private room.

A short way from downtown but convenient to bus lines are university dorm rooms open to travelers during the summer, when school isn't in session (that is, mid-May through mid-Aug). Dalhousie University (tel. 902/494-8840 or 888/271-9222) rents out a range of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units -- furnished with plain single beds each -- to the public. Many rooms have private bathrooms and kitchenettes (you rent the dishes for a small fee). During past summers, single rooms have begun at about C$40 (US$36/£20), double rooms around C$60 (US$54/£30), and apartments cost more than that, but check with the university about current pricing and options. Note that a 2-night minimum stay is required for some of these units.
