It’s not the first name in seafood restaurants in Halifax, but in my experience, it comes out ahead of those that jump to mind. Set in a 1906 fire station smack in the center of downtown, McKelvie’s specializes in seafood with a twist, and always with the accent on bold flavors. I’ve never had a better calamari dish than their spicy Jump-Up Calamari in jalapeno tomato sauce with a touch of honey. Another star of the menu: little fish tacos filled with light tempura battered haddock bits, seasoned with cilantro lime cream. If those don’t tempt, know that all the usual fish dishes are also here, everything from pan seared scallops to blackened organic salmon, but prepared with real flare.
