This sophisticated hotel originated in the early 20th century as a brick-fronted, industrial-looking iron foundry. A team of designers transformed it, achieving a radical, postmodern feel with a high-tech design motif. Whiffs of the Industrial Age are artfully preserved, even celebrated. The tasteful bedrooms fall into five categories, ranging from "Small" to "XX-Large." In all, this is the first swanky retreat ever to open in the funky red-light district.

Everything is minimalist, with "rainfall" shower heads, luxe toiletries, stained-glass windows, and undulating columns. In summer, local guests lounge on the rattan chaise longues in the open-air courtyard or take to the rooftop terrace.
