Downtown, in the heart of the Old Quarter chaos on Hang Dau Street (just north of Hoan Kiem Lake), is Salute Hotel -- the first and most humble offering by the friendly folks at A-Z Salute Café. A huge two-room suite goes for $45 (£25). There's an elevator, unique in minihotels, and the lobby is enclosed and air-conditioned. Popular with Australian travelers, the hotel is staffed by a very friendly lot who can help out with any detail.
