Getting There

You can take a car/passenger ferry to Tarbert, capital of Harris, from Uig on the Isle of Skye, Monday to Saturday. There are one or two ferries per day; a one-way ticket for the 1 3/4-hour trip costs £9.80 (£44 with car). Contact Caledonian MacBrayne (tel. 08705/650-000; www.calmac.co.uk).

Buses run from Stornoway to Tarbert daily (a 70-min. trip). Call Harris Coaches (tel. 01859/502-441) for schedules. At least five buses per day make the run Monday to Saturday.

If you're driving from Stornoway on Lewis in the north, head south along A859 to reach Tarbert.

Visitor Information

A tourist office operates from the port at Tarbert (tel. 01859/502-011). April to October, it's open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm; November to March, it's open Monday and Friday 11am to 1pm, and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 11am to 2pm.
