Getting There -- Interstates 84 and 91 intersect in central Hartford, which is halfway between New York and Boston.

Bradley International (tel. 203/627-3000; airport code BDL), in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, about 12 miles north of the city, is served by several major airlines, including American (tel. 800/433-7300), Continental (tel. 800/525-3273), Delta (tel. 800/221-1212), Northwest (tel. 800/225-2525), United (tel. 800/864-8331), and US Airways (tel. 800/428-4322).

Amtrak (tel. 800/USA-RAIL; www.amtrak.com) has several trains that stop daily in Hartford.

Visitor Information -- Connecticut's Commission on Culture & Tourism (tel. 888/288-4778; www.ctvisit.com) will mail you a free vacation guide if you ask. The website also lists special hotel packages and a "This Weekend" page of suggested activities.

Special Events -- In late July, the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz (www.hartfordjazz.com) offers free performances at the pavilion in Bushnell Park.
