In ruins now, the first of the Norman castles built in England sprouted on a western hill overlooking Hastings, around 1067. The fortress was unfortified by King John in 1216 and was later used as a church. Owned by the Pelham dynasty from the latter 16th century to modern times, the ruins have been turned over to Hastings. There is now an audiovisual presentation of the castle's history, including the famous battle of 1066. From the mount, you'll have a good view of the coast and promenade.
