Frommer's Review
One of the best ways to snorkel Kealakekua Bay, the marine-life preserve that's one of the best snorkel spots in Hawaii, is on Fair Wind's half-day sail-and-snorkel cruise to Kealakekua. Recently the company has added the latest (state-of-the-art) luxury 55-foot foil-assist catamaran (the first on the Big Island) for an upscale experience that promises a faster and smoother ride on a boat full of luxury. We recommend the Hula Kai cruise, a 5-hour morning snorkel and dive cruise that includes a light breakfast, a gourmet barbecue lunch, two snorkeling sites, a guided tour, and optional scuba diving for $149 adults (minimum age 8). Hula Kai also has an afternoon snorkeling and sunset barbecue for $125 (minimum age 8). Fair Wind also has a 60-foot catamaran that holds up to 100 passengers. The morning cruise leaves from Keauhou Bay at 9am and returns at 1:30pm, and includes a light breakfast, lunch, snorkel gear, and lessons; it goes for $115 for adults, $69 for kids 4 to 12 years, and $29 for toddlers. The afternoon snack cruise is a little shorter and a little cheaper: It runs from 2 to 5:30pm and includes snacks, sailing, and snorkeling, at a cost of $75 for adults, $45 for 4-12 year olds, and free for kids 3 and under. During whale season, the Hula Kai has a 3-hour whale-watching trip for $69.
