Elite Hotel Mollberg

This landmark hotel is arguably Sweden's oldest continuously operated hotel and restaurant. It still attracts traditionalists, though trendsters infinitely prefer the more glamorous Elite Hotel Marina Plaza . Although a tavern has stood on this site since the 14th century, most of the building was constructed in 1802. Its elaborate wedding-cake exterior and high-ceilinged interior have long been its hallmarks. Kings, counts, and barons used to check in here, although there aren't too many of those fellows around anymore. The Swedish king Gustav IV Adolf, on the way home from Pomerania, checked in for 2 months, not wanting to go back to Stockholm right away.

As is typical of a building of this age, bedrooms come in different shapes and sizes, but each has been modernized and furnished in a comfortable, tasteful way. On-site is a modern French-style brasserie with special musical evenings, and a rather successful clone of a London pub, the Bishop's Arms, with the town's largest selection of different beers and whisky.
