Helsinki was host to the Olympic Games in 1952; a tower remains from its impressive sports stadium, and an elevator whisks passengers up to the top for a panoramic view of the city and the archipelago. The stadium, 2km (1 1/4 miles) from the city center, was originally built in 1940, but the Olympic Games scheduled for that year were canceled when World War II broke out. The seating capacity of the stadium is 40,000, larger than any other arena in the country.
