Coral: A Costly Souvenir -- While exquisite coral jewelry is abundant in Naples and much sought after by collectors, ecologically minded shoppers may wish to steer clear. Because Mediterranean coral reefs are already so depleted, much of the coral crafted in Naples arrives from Thailand, the Philippines, and other Asian-Pacific nations, where there is little to no regulation of coral harvesting and where reefs are disappearing at an alarming rate. The World Wildlife Fund is urging coral designers and manufacturers to pledge not to use red and pink coral, the most at-risk -- and also the most precious -- varieties, until the industry is more closely regulated. Though we cannot attest to the sustainability of their practices, the most respected firm is the century-old Basilio Liverino, Via Montedoro 61 (tel. 081-8811225; www.liverino.it). If you wish to appreciate coral artistry without making a purchase, you can visit their museum (call ahead), displaying the world's best collection of cameos and corals.
