This 1925 landmark on the picturesque, riverside corner of Dong Khoi Street (formerly Catinat) still has some historical charm despite many renovations and is a real picture-postcard colonial from the outside. The hotel is an affordable and atmospheric choice, and it's always full. The lobby is a busy affair of stained glass windows, chandeliers, and Roman statues, but rooms and facilities here are classy and comfortable for the cost. High ceilings, original wood floors, and retro fixtures are a nice touch in all rooms. Bathrooms are large, all with tubs and old-style taps. Majestic suites have large Jacuzzis. The small central courtyard pool area is lined with picturesque shuttered windows and walkways; in fact, the best choices are the fine deluxe rooms facing this quiet spot. Suites are just larger versions of deluxe rooms, and standards are small and quite basic. The staff couldn't be nicer -- they're the friendliest I've ever met at a Saigontourist-operated hotel -- and has a genuine desire to make your stay memorable, whether that means explaining the eccentricities of Vietnamese cuisine or hailing you a taxi. Don't miss the great views from the rooftop Sky-Bar, a good spot to have a chat and popular for weddings and parties.
