Frommer's Review
Liberty 1 is the best choice of the Liberty Hotel chain, which has four other properties in Saigon. Their Hotel Metropole (148 Tran Hung Dao; tel. 08/920-1937) is the fanciest, but it's a bit smelly and really just a regional businessman's hotel. This hotel is just a short ride or long walk up busy Hai Ba Trung Street, just north of the Dong Khoi area in District 3. A bright, busy staff greets you at the door of the bright, busy lobby. Red-carpet halls give it that "old men's hotel in Brooklyn" feeling, but everything is clean, and rooms are quite large if rather plain. All rooms have tidy tile bathrooms, all with tub/shower units, and the best rooms on higher floors have decent city views -- though the elevator is slow as molasses. The hotel is near a busy park and local shopping area, with lots of fruit stands, coffee shops, and bright bakeries, and the place is popular for long-stay business guests. One drawback is the chaotic traffic out front on Hai Ba Trung, a popular commute in and out of the city and noisy night and day; otherwise a good midrange choice.
