Dong Phuong: Oriental Hotel

A popular minihotel right in the heart of Pham Ngu Lao, Dong Phuong is a little more grand than others. Large and always busy with budget groups, the hotel has a friendly staff and rooms with basic amenities like air-conditioning and cable TV; it is otherwise not outstanding -- just tidy, with chintzy furnishings and loud checkered bedspreads. The Oriental is a good choice if you're between trips to the Mekong Delta and onward travel to the north, as you can make your travel plans easily through the tour operators just outside on De Tham. Go for one of the good-size double or triple rooms facing the front, some with large octagonal windows or balconies facing the busy street below and the city skyline beyond. There are no amenities to speak of, but the neighborhood itself is your best budget resource.
