Introduction to Hofn

Höfn (often used interchangeably with "Hornafjörður") simply means "harbor." Höfn is a busy fishing port, lying on a narrow neck of land within shallow, protected waters. The town has under 2,000 people, but that qualifies it for regional center of the southeast. For travelers Höfn is simply a stopover, or a base for trips to Vatnajökull, Lónsöræfi, and elsewhere in the area. Höfn gets a major share of Iceland's lobster catch, and has a Lobster Festival (Humarhátið) the first weekend in July, with all sorts of family entertainment.
