Planning a Trip

Getting There

By Plane or Train -- Major transport connections go through Danang. From there, you can take a car to Hoi An for between $8 and $25 (£4.45-£14).

By Bus -- Hoi An is a major stop on all open-tour-cafe buses. Connection with Danang is just $3 (£1.65).

Getting Around

Hoi An is so small that you'll memorize the map in an hour or two. Most hotels and guesthouses rent out bicycles for 5,000 VND to 7,000 VND (35¢-45¢/£0.20-£0.25) a day, a great way to explore the outer regions of the city or head out to Cua Dai Beach. Motorbikes are 45,000 VND to 75,000 VND ($3-$5/£1.65-£2.75) per day and are not difficult to drive in this tiny city or out busy Cua Dai Road to the beach, but going by foot or on a bicycle is the best, quietest option for touring this historic town, and increasingly the streets in the heart of the old city are forbidding motorbike traffic (not that anyone follows the rules). Cyclos are here and there; 10,000 VND (65¢/£0.35) or so should get you anywhere within the city. Car rental is available anywhere. Try Faifoo Travel for a car by the hour or for the day (tel. 0510/914-580) or contact Mai Linh Taxi at tel. 0510/914-914.
