In downtown Hood River, drop in at the community-sponsored, not-for-profit Columbia Art Gallery, 101 Third St. (tel. 541/386-4512; columbiaartgallery.org). If you're an avid cook, you'll want to stop in at Annz Panz, 315 Oak St. (tel. 541/387-2654), a large and well-stocked cookware store with a cafe and espresso counter. The first Friday of each month, downtown galleries and shops are open from 5 to 8pm with local artists on hand to sell their work and demonstrate their skills. Between mid-May and mid-October, you can sample local produce at downtown Hood River's Saturday Market on Cascade Avenue between Fifth and Seventh streets from 9am to 3pm.
