No guesthouses in Hornstrandir offer made-up beds; you must bring your own sleeping bag. All have guest kitchens and are open from around mid-June to late August. If any guesthouse proves difficult to reach, West Tours can act as a booking agent. Note: No Hornstrandir guesthouses accept credit cards.

Within the nature reserve, the most accessible guesthouse from Ísafjörður is Læknishúsið (tel. 456-7183 [after July 1 call Hesteyri directly on 853-6953]; 7,050kr per person); this former doctor's house is in Hesteyri, an abandoned village on Hornstrandir's south coast. On the north coast, a few kilometers east of Hornvík, Óvissuferðir (tel. 566-6752 or 892-5219; www.ovissuferdir.net; 7,000kr per person) sleeps 50 in a building adjoined to the Látravík lighthouse (aka Hornbjarg lighthouse or Hornbjargsviti).

Grunnavík, at the tip of the Snæfjallaströnd Peninsula south of Hornstrandir, is included in some ferry routes and has the guesthouse Ferðaþjónustan Grunnavík (tel. 456-4664 or 852-4819; grunnavik@grunnavik.is; www.grunnavik.is; 5,500kr per person).

Wild camping in the nature reserve is free. All accommodations above have tent sites for around 2,500kr per person, including use of facilities.

Two rudimentary guesthouses -- neither of which have private doubles -- lie on the east coast of Hornstrandir, along the Freydís ferry route from Norðurfjörður to Hælavík. The first is Reykjarfjörður (tel. 456-7215 or 853-1615; reykjarfjordur@simnet.is; 2,500kr/$40/£20 per person), in the fjord of the same name, just outside the nature reserve. Reykjarfjörður's best asset is a large, outdoor geothermal pool. The second guesthouse is Ferðaþjónustan Mávaberg, (tel. 852-8267; mavaberg@freydis.is) in Bolungarvík, three fjords west of Reykjarfjörður.
