Huahine Travel Guide
Known as the Garden Island because of its lush greenery contrasted with its long, white sandy beaches, Huahine is - like Tahiti - in fact two islands: Huahine Nui - the smaller - in the north and Huahine Iti - the larger - in the south, separated by a narrow hollow channel said to be the god Hiro's canoe.
Known for its fierce warriors and traditional attitudes, Huahine is sometimes referred to as the "secret" or "rebel" island and boasts one of the largest and best-preserved archaeological sites: the Maeva marae, which is a group of a number of large sanctuary areas to gods or ancestors built at the foot of Mount Mouatapu and on the shores of Lake Fauna Nui.
