House Rentals with Cars and Boats -- American Rande Vetterli has two clean, well-equipped houses for rent at Rande's Shack, on the shore north of Fare (tel. 68.86.27; www.haere-mai.pf; email@example.com). Both have TVs, fans, and kitchens. One house has two bedrooms and can sleep five people; a one-bedroom model can sleep three people. Rates are 10,000CFP and 15,000CFP (US$125 and US$188/£63 and £95), respectively.
The two lodgings listed here, both on the north shore of Maroe Bay, represent good value since they throw in the use of a car and motorboat in their rates. Neither is a hotel or pension; you get a modern house to yourself.
Camping -- You can pitch a tent or rent a rudimentary thatched-roof fare (cabin) at Cecèle and Hubert Bremond's Huahine Camping (tel. 68.85.20 or 68.83.78), on the southern end of Avea Beach. The shoreline here has as many coral ledges as it has sand, but the shady grounds are appealing. Guests share a communal kitchen, tables under a thatched roof, toilets, and cold-water showers (don't expect a shower head). The cabins have either a double bed or two single beds and cost 6,000CFP (US$75/£38), while tent sites are 1,800CFP (US$23/£11) per person.
