Hurghada has seen a huge expansion in its hotel capacity in recent years, and the outskirts of the city are still a giant construction zone. Despite the pressure of increased competition and cut-throat pricing of packages, there are still some excellent high-end resorts in town and a little to the south in Sahl Hashish and to the north in Gouna. Though there are also some fine places to stay in town, they are the exception, and even some of the well-established hotels -- such as the once respectable Grand Hotel -- are now best avoided.
