Introduction to Iceland

If you want to believe in magic, go to Iceland.

An entirely improbable land at the top of the world, Iceland contains (among other things) a visible line separating two continents, glaciers covering volcanoes, thirty-foot-high exploding gouts of hot water, the landscape used by NASA to represent the Moon, people speaking ancient Norse, a town entirely overrun by elves, and days when the sun never goes down.

For those who love the outdoors, Iceland is a unique experience, full of scenery you're guaranteed to see nowhere else. For culture vultures, this nation of 270,000 is bizarrely fertile: everyone seems to be in a band, writing a novel, going to the movies, and while still finding time to part all night on the weekends.

While Iceland is technically part of Europe, Icelanders differ great from those on the continent. Most Europeans have family names; Icelanders don't. Most outdoor pools are pretty cold; Icelandic pools are steaming hot, warmed by the magma continually bubbling just under the island's fragile crust. Most countries have at least some unattractive people in them. Iceland, apparently, has none.

This is a very, very weird place.
