Iceland vacations are often planned around a specific multi-day adventure, arranged either through a tour company or on your own. Knowing if and when you'll have a rental car -- and whether it will have four-wheel drive -- will affect your itinerary. Rental cars are convenient, as public transportation does not reach many parts of the country.

Some travelers are inclined to wing it and improvise their itinerary as they go, but advance planning can save you a lot of grief, particularly in mid-June through August, when accommodations and tours often fill up. All itineraries should include some slack time. In Iceland, the factors most likely to derail an overbooked itinerary are the weather and weather-based cancellations of domestic flights.
