The drive from Québec City to the island is short. Get on Autoroute 440 east, in the direction of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré. In about 15 minutes, the Île d'Orléans bridge will be on your right. Take exit 325. If you'd like to hire a guide, Maple Leaf Guide Services (tel. 877/622-3677 or 418/622-3677; www.mapleleafservices.com) can provide one in your car or theirs. Biking over the bridge is not recommended, given the bridge's narrow and precarious pedestrian sidewalk. Cyclists who arrive with their bikes on the back of their cars can park at the tourist office for a small fee, or in any of the parking lots of the island's churches for free.

Dupont, which also goes by the name Old Québec Tours (tel. 800/267-8687 or 418/664-0460; www.tourdupont.com), offers a 4 1/2-hour "countryside" tour that besides Île d'Orléans includes a visit to the Montmorency Falls, a "sugar shack" bakery (with maple-based products), Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, and the Albert Gilles Copper Art Boutique and Museum -- he's the artist who created the doors of the Basilica.
