Frommer's Review
Even if you're not a guest at the richly atmospheric Romantik Hotel Schwarzer Adler (above), you might appreciate a meal within its historic premises. If you do, you'll follow in the footsteps of the 18th-century Kaiser Maximilian, who housed one of his mistresses in one of the lodgings within this building and who used to entertain her in one or another of these dining rooms. You'll have the option of dining within one of three cozily wood-paneled stubes (parlors) near the reception desk, on the hotel's ground floor, or within the more stately looking cellar, beneath the soaring vaulted ceilings of a dining room (Spiesesaal K&K -- Kaiser und Königlich) that honors its long-ago associations with royalty. Cuisine is elaborate and intricate, the product of a management that's proud of the hotel's status as a member of Europe's Romantik Hotel chain. The finest examples include a salad of wild quail served with lentils, strips of braised goose liver, and a sauce that's enhanced with apple liqueur. There's also a divine smoked venison with a terrine of wild grouse and black bread; grilled filets of wild boar served with roasted potatoes; a gratin of wild mushrooms; and a salad of wild and mixed baby greens. Dessert might include a selection of sorbets flavored with wild alpine berries. As you'd expect, the wine list is long, broad, and impressive, with lots of wines from relatively obscure regions of Austria.
