Tips for Gay and Lesbian Travelers

Ireland has come a long way since homosexuality was legalized in 1993 (1982 in the North), but gay and lesbian visitors should be aware that this is still a deeply conservative country. With rare exceptions, gay communities are relatively low-key, and even in such ostensibly liberal places as Dublin and Galway, queer-bashing is not unheard of. Things have improved light-years over the last decade, but this is still not New York or San Francisco. Proceed with caution.

That said, there's a burgeoning gay community in Dublin. The Gay Community News (GCN) is a monthly free newspaper of comprehensive Irish gay-related information, available in gay venues and bookshops. In Dublin, the city's leading event listings guide, dedicates several pages to gay events, club info, and a helpful directory. Two minimagazines have recently emerged -- Free! and Scene City -- both contain city maps with gay venues highlighted.

Among the best resources on the Web are Gay Ireland Online (www.gay-ireland.com) and Outhouse (www.outhouse.ie). These include events listings, advice sections, useful contacts, and discussion forums.

The following is a selection of organizations and help lines, staffed by knowledgeable and friendly people:

  • Outhouse Community & Resource Centre, 105 Capel St., Dublin 1 (tel. 01/873-4932; fax 01/865-0900; www.outhouse.ie).

  • National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF), 2 Scarlet Row, Dublin 2 (tel. 01/671-0939; fax 01/671-3549; nlgf@tinet.ie).

  • Gay Switchboard Dublin, Carmichael House, North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7 (tel. 01/872-1055; fax 01/873-5737; www.gayswitchboard.ie), Monday to Friday 7:30 to 9:30pm and Saturday 3:30 to 6pm.

  • Lesbian Line Dublin, Carmichael Centre, North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7 (tel. 01/872-9911), Thursday 7 to 9pm.

  • LOT (Lesbians Organizing Together), the umbrella group of the lesbian community, has a drop-in cafe at 5 Capel St., Dublin 1 (tel./fax 01/872-7770), open Monday to Thursday 10am to 6pm and Friday 10am to 4pm. LOT also sponsors LEA/Lesbian Education Awareness (tel./fax 01/872-0460; leanow@indigo.ie).

  • AIDS Helpline Dublin (tel. 1800/549-549 toll-free), run Monday to Friday 7 to 9pm and Saturday 3 to 5pm, offers assistance with HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and treatment. Also has branches in Belfast (tel. 0800/137-437), Galway (tel. 091/562213), Cork (tel. 021/276676), Limerick (tel. 061/316661), and Donegal (tel. 074/25500).

The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) (tel. 800/448-8550 or 954/776-2626; www.iglta.org) is the trade association for the gay and lesbian travel industry, and offers an online directory of gay- and lesbian-friendly travel businesses; go to their website and click on "Members."

Many agencies offer tours and travel itineraries specifically for gay and lesbian travelers. Among them are Above and Beyond Tours (tel. 800/397-2681; www.abovebeyondtours.com), Now, Voyager (tel. 800/255-6951; www.nowvoyager.com), and Olivia Cruises & Resorts (tel. 800/631-6277; www.olivia.com).

Gay.com Travel (tel. 800/929-2268 or 415/644-8044; www.gay.com/travel or www.outandabout.com), is an excellent online successor to the popular Out & About print magazine. It provides regularly updated information about gay-owned, gay-oriented, and gay-friendly lodging, dining, sightseeing, nightlife, and shopping establishments in every important destination worldwide.

The following travel guides are available at many bookstores, or you can order them from any online bookseller: Spartacus International Gay Guide (Bruno Gmünder Verlag; www.spartacusworld.com/gayguide) and Odysseus: The International Gay Travel Planner (Odysseus Enterprises Ltd.); and the Damron guides (www.damron.com), with separate, annual books for gay men and lesbians.
