The Jungle Lodge Review

The Jungle Lodge, an idyllic hideaway nestled in thick, tropical forest, is an intimate retreat for travelers who love and are comfortable with nature. It is hands-down one of my favorite lodges in Panama -- but I must stress that it is not for everyone. The Jungle Lodge is located on the shore of Bahía Honda, and a short boat ride from the closest beach. The aesthetic is spare yet very stylish, and their 23-hectare (57-acre) property has a screened-in butterfly farm and a creek with natural bathing pools. There are just three thatched-roof ranchos (cabins) for two guests each, with hammocks and beds draped in voluminous mosquito nets. The open-air ranchos provide a sense of harmony and oneness with the surrounding jungle. At sunset and sunrise, the primal, animated chorus of wildlife that emanates from the jungle canopy is exciting to hear, and if you're lucky you might catch sight of a group of monkeys swinging through the trees. Cabin nos. 2 and 3 are higher up the slope, providing gorgeous, sweeping views, but it's a vigorous hike to reach both. Two cabins have no electricity. The young hosts, Henry and Margaret, provide a friendly, relaxed environment and are well-versed in the flora, fauna, and culture of Bocas. Their motto is sustainable tourism: buying products from Ngobe-Buglé Indians and employing them as local guides, and growing their own ingredients on an organic farm for their delicious, gourmet meals (included in the price). There are free activities, but most excursions cost extra.

Facilities:
Restaurant; tours; dugout canoe; surfboard rentals

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
