Hacienda del Toro Review

Situated on an old cattle ranch on the verdant shore of Laguna Bocatorito, this newer lodge is a self-styled "Caribbean Dude Ranch," and the only lodge to offer horseback riding among other unique activities. The cabins are spacious and fresh, in pastel-colored hues and decorated with local art, and they come with feather-soft beds. Each room has a deck that overlooks the bay, and comes with a wide hammock; one cabin has a full kitchen. The main building is an open-air, thatched-roof structure used as a dining room and lounge. Another perk here is this lodge's proximity to the bay and the option to paddle out on a kayak and see bottlenose dolphins -- this plus horseback rides make the lodge a kid-pleasing place to stay. (Kids under 10 stay free, too.) Much of the neighboring land is pockmarked with areas of deforestation; however, the owners are letting the area revert to forest, and encouraging their neighbors to do so as well. On a half-day horseback ride, guests will still be able to lope through thick secondary jungle. Rates include breakfast, round-trip transportation from Bocas, and use of kayaks.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; horseback riding tours and lessons; kayaks; tour desk

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
