Review of Dragon Challenge

Frommer's Rating: A+

Recommended Ages: 10-adult

The entrance, marked by an ominous, albeit somewhat unremarkable, stone archway and flanked by flags and Triwizard Tournament banners (rather than the magnificent intertwining dragons, which, to be perfectly honest, were far more eye-catching), leads to the ride's lengthy queue. A stone path winds along the edge of the Forbidden Forest, the Weasleys' flying car plunked amid the trees near the castle entrance -- the interior of which has been re-themed to resemble the Triwizard champions' tent, with the Goblet of Fire prominently displayed in the center. Just beyond lies the Triwizard Cup. The ride itself remains much the same (though the Hungarian Horntail and the Chinese Fireball now await you rather than Fire and Ice). There's no doubt that maniacal minds created this thrill ride -- sending two roller coasters right at each other at high speeds. True coaster crazies will love the intertwined set of leg-dangling racers that climb to 125 feet, invert five times, and three times come within 12 inches of each other as the two dragons battle. This coaster sports a tighter track with quick banking turns and sharp twists, making the ride somewhat jerky -- far from the smooth and fluid experience of the Hulk. But the roughness may be part of its charm -- a couple of thrill junkies revealed to me that this is where they head when they want the city's ultimate adrenaline rush. For the best ride, try to get one of the two outside seats in each of the eight rows. If you want to get into the front seat (for that extra jolt), there's a special line near the loading dock so that daredevils can claim the first car. Note: Expectant mothers and those with heart, neck, or back problems shouldn't ride. Riders must be at least 54 inches tall.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
