Getting There -- You can fly by plane or helicopter. Isles of Scilly Skybus Ltd. (tel. 0845/7105555; www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk) operates 2 to 20 flights per day, depending on the season, between Penzance's Land's End Airport and Hugh Town on St. Mary's Island. Flight time on the eight-passenger fixed-wing planes is 15 minutes each way. The round-trip fare is £80 to £230 for a same-day return or £95 to £340 if you plan to stay overnight.

A helicopter service run by British International Helicopters, Penzance Heliport Eastern Green (tel. 01736/363871 for recorded information; www.islesofscillyhelicopter.com), operates, weather permitting, up to 26 helicopter flights, Monday through Saturday, between Penzance, St. Mary's, and Tresco. Flight time is 20 minutes from Penzance to either island. A same-day round-trip fare is £104, £120 to £154 if you choose to stay overnight. A bus, whose timing coincides with the departure of each flight, runs to the heliport from the railway station in Penzance for £2 per person each way.

The rail line ends in Penzance.

Slower, but more cadenced and contemplative, is a ship leaving from the Isles of Scilly Travel Centre, on Quay Street in Penzance (tel. 0845/710-5555; www.islesofscilly-travel.co.uk). It departs at least 6 days a week between April and October, requiring 2 hours and 40 minutes for the segment between Penzance and Hugh Town, with an additional 20 or so minutes for the second leg of the trip, which is from Hugh Town to Tresco. It departs Monday to Friday at 9:15am, returning from St. Mary's at 4:30pm. Saturday departures usually follow the Monday-to-Friday timing, but not always, as the managers sometimes add a second Saturday sailing to accommodate weekend holidaymakers, depending on the season. Between November 6 and April 7 there is no service. Depending on the time of year, a same-day round-trip ticket from Penzance to St. Mary's costs £38 for adults and £20 for children 15 and younger. If you choose to spend the night, the trip costs £50 each way (£23 for children 15 and younger).
