Although homosexuality can be traced back to Ottoman times, a stigma is still attached to it: The worst insult used among Turks (especially at soccer games) is ibne, a term referring to the receiving partner in a same-sex act. Practically speaking, homosexuality in Turkey is legal between consenting partners above the age of 18. Several hamams are generally accepted as gay (the men's side), including the Tarihi Galatasaray Hamami in Beyoglu (for hours and fees); Park Hamami, Divanyolu, Dr. Emin Pasa Sok., Sultanahmet (no phone); and Aquarium, Istiklal Cad., Sadri Alisik Sok. 29 (tel. 0212/251-8926).
