With such a prestigious location and a star-studded guest book that includes Jackie Kennedy, Mohammed Ali, and Richard Nixon, who'd have thought that Konyali was a franchise operation with over 10 outlets in Istanbul? But what was once good enough for the queen is little more than a convenient if stunningly sited stopover for a short walk through history.

Diners at Topkapi are expecting the recipes they've read about in the guidebooks, but other than exorbitant prices, Konyali offers nothing more than the usual lineup of stews, kebaps, and eggplant dishes. Diners should pass up the a la carte dining room and opt for the cafeteria-style cafe section, where you can enjoy the same views of the Marmara Sea without the prices and pretension. Tipping its hat to a mostly tourist clientele, there's also a bureau de change on the premises.
