Divan ReviewFirst among the Koç Group's three Divan hotels in Istanbul and built in 1956, the Divan was the first five-star property to grace Taksim Square. In the 5 decades since, other, more modern hotels sprang up (including two Divans, outside the city center), and this, the flagship property, a dreary five-story concrete block, was an eyesore to clients and owners alike. In 2008, the complete demolition of the property was completed, and it is expected that by the end of 2010 (optimistically speaking, for this is Turkey, after all), the Koç family will cut the ribbon on a gorgeous new, Thierry Despont-designed building of reinterpreted classical Turkish architecture and unerring, deluxe hospitality. The hotel will have 228 rooms, 2 themed restaurants, the requisite Divan patisserie, a spa, a swimming pool, and meeting and conference rooms. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
