Located in an unpolished corner of Sultanahmet just steps behind the Hippodrome, the Arena Hotel is truly a diamond in the rough. The three-story hotel occupies a restored Ottoman house that has remained in the same generation for over 80 years, retaining traditional touches such as family heirloom furnishings and "grandmother Gül's caftan" in the lobby's salon. The rooms reflect the good taste of a bygone era, and feature gleaming wood floors and classic Turkish rugs. There are two suites, each with a balcony, the only two tubs in the house and a flatscreen TV. Better yet, there's an intimate little hamam on the basement level and a charming and reasonably priced restaurant with an alfresco extension in a trellised courtyard.
