Galata Antique Hotel ReviewLocated just down the street from the British embassy and a few steps away from the entrance to Tünel and Istiklal Caddesi, the Galata Antique provides a friendly and convenient home base for any stay in Istanbul. The entrance to the hotel sits in the middle of a steep incline navigated by a flight of exterior steps, so the Galata Antique may not be appropriate for everyone. The building was designed by the French architect Vallaury in 1881 and still retains some 19th-century charm in its caged elevator and carved wooden arches. The rooms are basic and a bit old, while the bathrooms have sparse sink and shower setups (although perfectly fine); but the owner, Düygu, tells me that it's time for a face-lift, so stay tuned. Breakfast on the top-floor terrace is also a great way to start the morning. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
