Sirkeci Konak

With prices going through the roof for rooms in Sultanahmet, it was really just a matter of time before the Sirkeci neighborhood became fashionable. One of the more charming additions to the neighborhood is the Sirkeci Konak, occupying a traditional clapboard reproduction around the corner from its older sister property, the Orient Express Hotel (tel. 0212/520-7161; www.orientexpresshotel.com). Although still a reasonable option, by comparison the Konak gets all As for effort and implementation. The Ottoman interiors go well beyond the usual sateen bedspread (the ones here are textured in velvet) to lend a more oriental, and regal, sense to the decor. Views of Gülhane Park ease the eye, too. The rates are a bit high for this neighborhood (isn't the area around the train supposed to be cheap?), but the freebies (including free cooking lessons) at least go a bit toward easing the sticker shock.
