Inn on Columbia ReviewLess B&B than European-style boutique hotel (albeit with just three rooms), this completely revamped 1832 Greek Revival house on South Hill, near Ithaca College and Cornell, is a swank and stylish place to stay. It's owned by a married couple, the husband an architect (he did the revamping) and the wife a chef who cooks up Asian-fusion dishes and inventive breakfasts "when guests allow her to." Choose the room in the main house, with vaulted ceilings and skylights; the carriage house, with an outdoor deck, full kitchen, and living room; or the hexagonal gazebo room (the last two are detached from the main house, in the pretty gardens out back). No architectural detail has been overlooked, from automatic lights to custom furniture; the overall aesthetic is cool and modern. For longer stays, ask about rooms in several other houses similarly restored by the owners in the same neighborhood. If you're pulling into town with no reservations, check out the "Procrastinator's Special" -- any unoccupied room is just $115 (suite $165) for that night. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
