Sheen Falls Lodge Review

Originally the 18th-century home of the earl of Kerry, this salubrious resort sits beside a natural waterfall amid vast, sprawling grounds filled with a mixture of smooth lawns and lush gardens. The public areas are decorated in lemony tones, with plenty of polished woodwork, open fireplaces, and original oil paintings. Reception staff members address guests by name, the bar feels like a drawing room, and the 1,000-volume library, with its green leather sofas and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, is like an old-fashioned gentlemen's club. Guest rooms are spacious, decorated in rich, contemporary style; each overlooks the falls (stunning when floodlit at night) or the bay. There are also some self-catering cottages and villas available for those with deep pockets and a desire for privacy. It comes at a price, but this is the perfect Irish country-house atmosphere: elegant and yet relaxed.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; concierge; gym; Jacuzzi; indoor pool; room service; spa; tennis; billiard room; croquet; library; helicopter pad; horseback riding; private salmon fishing

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
