Hotel Ixtapan Spa & Golf Resort Review

The town's famous spa resort sits on 14 manicured and flower-filled hectares (35 acres). In operation since 1939, it feels aged, but unrenovated areas afford guests the nostalgic feel of the original hotel and spa. The resort offers golf, tennis, swimming, and miles of trails for walking, jogging, or biking. It also has swimming pools, an outdoor whirlpool, and a host of spa services such as Thai massages and Balinese hot clay treatments. Guests who opt out of the spa program can use the facilities on a per-treatment basis, and there's no daily admission charge. Rooms in the main building are slightly better furnished than the so-called "villa" rooms, but all are fairly basic. There are three restaurants: One features spa cuisine, another serves a more traditional international menu, and the third serves lunch by the pool. Many North Americans visit as part of a weight-loss program. The hotel shows movies each night. Round-trip taxi transportation from the Mexico City airport can be arranged at the time of reservation for around 3,200 pesos, which can be shared by up to four people. Rates for the different packages include full American plan (three meals daily).

Facilities: 3 restaurants; bar; piano lounge; mountain bikes; private 18-hole golf course; gym; aerobics room and classes; Internet; 2 outdoor pools; 2 indoor and 1 outdoor whirlpool; room service; sauna; 2 full-service spas; steam room; 2 tennis courts; hiking trails

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
