For a night of Andalusian flamenco, head uphill from the cathedral to Peña Flamenca Jaén, Calle Maestra 11 (tel. 95-323-17-10; flamencojaen@terra.es). Some rising flamenco artists strut their stuff here before they move on to the tourist joints of Seville and the Costa del Sol. Mixed drinks cost 3.50€ ($5.60) and beyond, or you can try a local drink -- manzanillo, the province's specialty apple liqueur. Artists perform on a wood stage that's overly adorned with regional artifacts, and there's a wooden bar. Hours are Monday to Friday from 8pm to 1am, Sunday from noon to 11am. There is no cover, and tapas range from 1.50€ to 6€ ($2.40-$9.60).

A hip bar, Moët, Avenida de Andalucía (tel. 95-327-30-94), near the train station, attracts a young crowd, especially students, with its DJ-spun Iberian pop. On the weekend it turns into a disco. There's no cover but mixed drinks cost 4.25€ ($6.80) and up. Beer is only 2€ ($3.20). Tapas cost from 2€ to 6€ ($3.20-$9.60). Open Monday to Wednesday 4pm to 4:30am, Thursday to Saturday 4pm until "we have to toss out the last drunk," as the waiter put it.
