Planning a Trip

Getting There -- Iberia and Avianco offer flights to Jerez daily from Barcelona and Zaragoza; four daily flights from Madrid; and several flights a week to and from Germany, London, and in the summer Grand Canary Island. The airport at Carretera Jerez-Sevilla is about 11km (7 miles) northeast of the city center (follow the signs to Seville). Call tel. 95-615-00-00 or visit www.aena.es for information.

Most visitors take one of 12 trains per day from Seville, taking 1 1/4 hours and costing 6.25€ ($8.15) one-way. Trains from Madrid also arrive daily. A ticket from Madrid to Jerez on the TALGO costs 59€ ($76), and the trip takes 4 1/2 hours. The railway station in Jerez is at the Plaza de la Estación s/n (tel. 90-224-02-02) at the eastern end of Calle Medina.

Bus connections are more frequent than train connections, and the location of the bus terminal is more convenient. You'll find it on Calle Cartuja at the corner of Calle Madre de Dios, a 12-minute walk east of the Alcázar. About 17 buses arrive daily from Cádiz (1 hr. away) and three buses per day travel from Ronda (2 3/4 hr.). Seven buses a day arrive from Seville (1 1/2 hr.). Call tel. 95-633-96-66 or visit www.renfe.es for more information.

Jerez lies on the highway (E-5) connecting Seville with Cádiz, Algeciras, Gibraltar, and the ferryboat landing for Tangier, Morocco. There's also an overland road connecting Jerez with Granada and Málaga.

Visitor Information -- The tourist office is at Paul s/n, Edificio Senitium (tel. 95-635-94-50; www.turismojerez.com). It's open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 2:30pm and 4:30 to 6:30pm, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30am to 3:30pm. The English-speaking staff can provide directions, transportation suggestions, open hours, and so on for any bodega you might want to visit. You'll also be given a map pinpointing the location of various bodegas.

Fast Facts -- The most convenient location to exchange money is Banco Santander Central Hispano, Plaza del Arenal (tel. 95-635-65-27), where you'll find ATMs. It's open Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 1:30pm. In case of an emergency, dial tel. 061; for the police, call tel. 091. If you need a hospital, head to Hospital Juan Grande, Felix Rodriguez de la Fuenta s/n (tel. 95-603-20-00). For Internet access, try The Big Orange, Calle Antonia de Jesús Tirado (tel. 95-635-01-01), near the bus station. The charge is 1.80€ ($2.35) per hour, and it's open Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 1am, Friday and Saturday 11am to 3am. The main branch of the post office is at Calle Cerrón 2 (tel. 95-632-67-33).
