Frommer's Review
Located in the heart of the city's restored 19th-century restaurant district, this popular and trendy pub restaurant keeps late hours and serves fresh, interesting food. The designer of the menu here (he's now chef at Chakra) is a master of spices, herbs, and seasonings. You can have a simple Jerusalem-style country plate of toasted pita, zatar (a mixture of local spices), fresh vegetables, and labaneh (yogurt cheese); or you can try Southeast Asian beef, chicken, or veggie pad Thai; South American roast beef (asado) in brandy and rosemary sauce; or designer broccoli blintzes in a béchamel, garlic, and walnut sauce. Shanty's special spicy pumpkin and sweet potato soup is one of my favorites; in season you'll find a dynamite mango soup as well. Hefty salads filled with chunks of hot chicken or marinated livers mixed with mild herbs and spices clock in at under NIS 45 ($10) and are meals in themselves. Shanty is always a favorite spot for wine, a salad, soup, and conversation; there's outdoor seating in good weather, but it gets very smoky inside. There's a full bar and wine list.
