Frommer's Review

This all-you-can-eat, kosher-meat restaurant in the South American tradition has a decidedly South African twist. It is one of Jerusalem's popular upper moderate-priced dining spots and the brainchild of an Israeli from South Africa who is a master at grilling. Sample from a large all-you-can-eat menu of meats brought to your table fresh from the oven or fire. At lunch there are two menus: a one-time-around sampling of six meats for NIS 60 ($13) and for NIS 18 ($4) more, an all-you-can-eat menu. But the real strength of the restaurant is at dinner, where the all-you-can-eat expands to 10 meat courses that change nightly, but may include rib-eye steak; chicken wings in peach sauce; goose legs in orange sauce; Bobotee (a South African dish of oven-baked dark turkey and dried fruit); flaky empanadas; or even a whole, juicy, honey-basted American-style turkey. There is an array of salads and vegetables (most with a South African twist), and a salmon alternative that is not Vaqueiro's strong point. Wines and tempting desserts are wheeled around on carts and are not included in the fixed price. Cape Brandy Cake (one portion can easily be shared by up to four after a dinner like this) is the dessert of choice. Located in a charming 19th-century mansion separated from the street by a walled garden, Vaquiero offers both atmosphere, and security.
