Frommer's Review
This large building, located in the Muslim Quarter between the Damascus and Lions' Gates, was built in 1857 and served as a hospital from 1948 to 1985. In recent years it was restored to its original use as a hostel for pilgrims and visitors to Jerusalem. Beautifully managed and renovated, the Austrian Hospice's gardens, terraces, fabulous rooftop vistas of the Old City, careful security, and dedicated staff are all real pluses. The feeling here is quiet but friendly, with visitors from all backgrounds welcome. Rooms are furnished simply but are comfortable and heated in winter; bathrooms have showers only. Inexpensive dorms are down in the basement. A coffee shop on the premises is open through the evening and serves light meals; half-board is available for $5 per person. Call ahead for information on wheelchair access (unusual in the Old City). Curfew is 10pm; but late-entry permission can be obtained.
